8/23/09: Frank Caliendo Show @ Turning Stone

I lucked out and won two $50 tickets on twitter for Frank Caliendo's comedy show at Turning Stone Resort and Casino. It was a great show, and you were able to meet Frank after the show. Was able to get in line quickly and get a picture with him, along with him signing my ticket stub. Nice little pickup of a popular guy!

8/22/09-8/25/09: Durham Bulls vs Syracuse Chiefs

Although I hate to do this, I am going to group this whole series in one post. How sad is it that two weeks before the end of the season, the Syracuse Chiefs play Durham (Triple A affiliate for Tampa Bay) for the ONLY time this year. This four game series was interesting. Rob Ducey (scout) was there, as well as a rehabbing Akinori Iwamura! I was able to kill off a lot for this game one. It rained during game two, and I left it early. They weren't bad, except for Fernando Perez, who is a douchebag. Thanks for ruining my pen, dick. Also, game two (Saturday 8/23) was autograph night for the Chiefs. I was able to kill off my remainder with them, even with the rain, since they signed in the concourse.

8/19/09: Buffalo Bisons vs Syracuse Chiefs

Final game between these two teams, so I tried to shore up my remaining. Did well except Ricky Bones decided ignore everyone. Weird. Not bad otherwise. Was able to kill off my extra Mike Lamb's that I thought I wouldn't be able to get, since he usually didn't sign after games.

8/18/09: Buffalo Bisons vs Syracuse Chiefs

This is the final two game series between Syracuse and Buffalo (NY Mets AAA affiliate). Didn't bother staying for the game, just got autos pregame and after. Was very happy to finally get Jon Switzer on my dual jersey card of him and Mike Gosling. When I received the card, both players were to be in Syracuse within the next month. First Gosling got traded, then called up. Then Switzer was called up. A bit frustrating to say the least!

8/15/09: Rochester Red Wings vs Syracuse Chiefs

Last game of the year between these two teams. It was a great finish for the team, with little left over. I even lucked out and got Jose Lugo in my book, when we didn't expect him to be around. It was also Wall of Fame night. It sucked, as Rick Leach no showed, however Geno Petralli and Jon Ratliff showed. Ratliff was in the stands a bit, while Petralli never made it to the stands, instead being in the Chiefs dugout. After the game ended, I spotted him and was able to get him to come sign from the field. Was a great spot by me!

8/13/09: Jimmy Wayne Concert @ Turning Stone

Went to the Jimmy Wayne concert. Was a great concert. Afterwards, there was a bit of a meet and greet in the hall. I was able to get a photo, as well as my ticket stub signed. We also got a picture with him. It was a nice little surprise.

8/12/09: Toledo Mud Hens vs Syracuse Chiefs

My last day of the 3 day series. At least today, one of the rehabbers actually stopped. Nate Robertson was alright. Bonderman told us no, Willis snuck out again. Oh well. They killed my rehab streak, but at least I got something out of one of em. What sucked was that the main dealer of the group was able to get Bonderman from the vehicle. It's so annoying that they will tell real fans no, but the dealer with balls to go up to the window gets the auto.

8/11/09: Toledo Mud Hens vs Syracuse Chiefs

Only time we see Toledo (Triple A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), and the great schedule maker allows only 3 days for 4 games. This means that today's game is a scheduled doubleheader. What a rip off. Rehabbing with Toledo: Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson, Dontrelle Willis. They snubbed or hid today. Bob Boone showed up again, so I was able to kill off my remainder of his.

8/8/09: Aberdeen Ironbirds vs Auburn Doubledays

Awful day out, but it was Auburn baseball card night, so it was a must to attend. Was able to complete all but one player. This, of course, meant I had little time for Aberdeen (short season A for Baltimore Orioles)...which was ok, since I needed no one in my books.

8/4/09: Vermont Lake Monsters vs Auburn Doubledays

Always interesting to see a lower level team affiliated with Syracuse. This time we got to see Vermont (Short Season A affiliate of Washington). They have more prospects than Syracuse, sadly...which at least means good things for the future of the franchise, I'd think. I was able to get most of what I wanted, thanks to getting Graham Hicks after the game, however the guy I needed in two books was the starter for them. Oh well.

7/31/09: Charlotte Knights vs Syracuse Chiefs

Final game of the series and for a good bit in Syracuse. Not a whole lot left to get, but I had decided I would try to get Van Benschoten. Yeah, swift move. I yelled his name three times while he was in the dugout. We assumed the first two times, since there was no reaction, that he could not hear due to the loud soundsystem in the stadium. Well, we realized we were wrong when he screams "WHAT" after my third call. Yup, still a prick. Surprisingly, however, after the game, someone got him to sign, so I was able to get my book. Well, he wasn't able to fit in the hotel van (weird on the final game of the series that they didn't have a bus to leave in), which helped me as someone else asked him to sign on his trip out for the second arrival of the van, and he signed what I had left. Yeah, the autograph means little to me except that I finally conquered the jerk. Also, we lucked out to realize that Justin Cassel, whom had been called up to Charlotte a few days before, was actually charting in the stands. We figured he'd be like most and just show up at their next stop.

I had hoped to get one more Elijah Dukes, as he was called up mid-game, but I was unable to get to him. Also, I missed an Aaron Poreda card, as by the time I heard he was traded, the hotel van was at the gates picking him and the others up, whom were traded. Bummer, but oh well.

7/30/09: Charlotte Knights vs Syracuse Chiefs

I waited for Charlotte pregame, while going to the Syracuse side afterwards. I was annoyed to find out that my old favorite (see early season 2008 post for sarcasm) John Van Benschoten had actually signed and did whole pages. Instead, I was able to finally get some Ross Detwiler cards. Oh darn. Add that sarcasm in again. By the time I made it to Charlotte side, I was also blown off by Tyler Flowers. I lucked out to get a couple pitchers right after the game from their side, though..on their way in from the bullpen after the completion of the game.

7/29/09: Charlotte Knights vs Syracuse Chiefs

Awful day, full of rain. The only reason I really showed up was because Frank Howard was signing autographs. He was the 1960 National League Rookie of the Year, and led the American League in home runs for two seasons. Of course, as is the case with most Syracuse promotions, it was total chaos. I was, however, able to grab him before the assinine 1/2 hour before the game that they made him leave to throw a first pitch. Relatively stupid, but that's Syracuse management. Unfortunately, we also found out today that Corey Patterson took his release. A nice guy, he will be missed around the ballpark!

7/28/09: Charlotte Knights vs Syracuse Chiefs

This starts the first of a four game series between Syracuse and Charlotte (Chicago White Sox's Triple A affiliate). For this game, six NBA player were signing autographs. This was due to Syracuse University hosting SportscasterU, a program for these players to learn to work in the media, for when their careers were over. Not bad, as many didn't know about it, so I was able to get everything signed (thanks to Dave Ryan telling me to keep going thru the line!) We also got a printed sheet of paper with the pictures of all 6 guys on it, which I got signed too. Pretty good day, especially since pitching coach Richard Dotson was one of the nicer coaches I've met.

7/27/09: Louisville Bats vs Syracuse Chiefs

Final game of the series. I went as far as to get a few index cards signed of some of the nice Cincinnati prospects, just because I had so little I needed signed. I did, however, get my 500th different card signed for the year. That honor goes to Kip Wells. And it took some persuading. I had one card left and I asked him to sign it since I figured I wouldn't ever see him here again. His response was either a diss to Louisville or Syracuse, as he said. "I hope not either, at least not with this team." Ouch. At least he was nice to me, felt better than the way he acted when he played here! Also, Devon White was here again doing his job for the Nationals.

Cards:

Louisville
Corky Miller - 2
Ted Power (Pitching Coach) - 1

7/26/09: Louisville Bats vs Syracuse Chiefs

Another iffy day. Didn't get a whole lot of anything done, but I didn't have much either. Killed off the rest of my books, which was great. The really cool thing is that I got Drew Sutton. Sutton had been sent down when the series began. He just showed up this day and by the next game was called up. So he was only there for one whole game, so it was a nice signature to get!

7/25/09: Louisville Bats vs Syracuse Chiefs

An awful weather day. Just as the game ended, the rain decided to come. Luckily, since the security cronies weren't around, the few of us around were able to stay undercover, which was also extremely helpful on killing off the majority of Louisville items I needed. I was even able to get to the Syracuse side before Dukes and Patterson left, which was even better! Glad I got Manuel and Roenicke as they were called up before the next day's game!

7/24/09: Louisville Bats vs Syracuse Chiefs

Home for a couple of four game series on this homestand of teams we haven't seen. We start off with the Louisville Bats (Triple A affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds). Pregame wasn't too great, but I was able to get some in my books from Louisville. Since none of the regulars who might have known the Bats were there, I decided to go for Syracuse after the game. Not too bad, but overall it wasn't a great first day.

7/20/09: Connecticut Defenders vs Binghamton Mets

My first and possibly only trip to Binghamton, this year. I love it there. As I've noted before, you can kill off so much during BP, it's insane. I had to make sure I made it to see Connecticut (Eastern League AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants). They were so great that I finished every single thing except one Baumgarner card, which I didn't both trying to get the rest of the day. What a great group of prospects. Baumgarner is only 19 and looks like he will be an ace sooner rather than later. He was really nice, too. I got some of Binghamton (Mets AA affiliate), but they always seem tough for me. I lucked out that Kirt Manwaring, the Giants' spring training catcher instructor/east coach type rover, not only showed up, but was the first one there before BP. Then, their coach was the 2nd to show up..not arriving on the bus because he was visiting with family. Definitely helped production, since I had a lot of them and we had them alone!

7/14/09: Oneonta Tigers vs Auburn Doubledays

Another freebie night, so I figured I'd go out during the long stretch of no Syracuse games. This was Detroit's NY-Penn League affiliate. Unfortunately, I found 4 more cards of the hitting coach after the game, so I only got the one I had with me. Nice group of guys. Luckily grabbed the guy I needed in my book in the stands, as he was charting. Auburn is not an easy place to grab a visiting pitcher, unless he is charting!

7/9/09: Rochester Red Wings vs Syracuse Chiefs

My last game of this 4 game series, as I was stuck working the first and last of it. Due to the lack of position players that I needed from Rochester, I ended up going for Syracuse before and after the game. Things went decent. I was also able to get Humber on a card for the first time, since he was charting again. Got ignored by scout and ex-major leaguer Dave Hollins. Also fun to see Mike Morse consistently avoiding the fans, while having Mike Vento pick him up at the office doors. Impressive...

7/8/09: Rochester Red Wings vs Syracuse Chiefs

First return to Syracuse by Rochester (Minnesota AAA affiliate) since the opening two games. A totally different team than the beginning of the season. Overall, not a bad team pregame, but they were iffy after the game, like most teams have been. Was able to get my Humber, as he was charting. He's actually at least a little bit more accessable than last year, but still not very personable. Also, Devon White was in the stands (apparently he was there the two games before, however I had to work). He wasn't exactly nice, but I got one of my cards signed.

My last game of this series. I killed off a bit pregame, thanks to pitchers coming off the field late on the Lehigh Valley side. 6/27/09: State College Spikes vs Auburn Doubledays

Since it was a freebie night and there wasn't much to do, we decided to take our first trip to Auburn this year. I needed a few guys on each team, so I figured why not. State College (Pittsburgh's New York/Penn League affiliate) was facing Auburn (Toronto's affiliate). I decided to go for the logo sheet again this year, as well as my Auburn player profile program insert. So basically, the same plan as last year. Not too bad, as I got everyone I needed except one guy got called up that morning, that I needed in my book. I was happy to get one of Pittsburgh's 1st round picks from this year (49th pick in sandwich part of the round) Victor Black. Overall, good and fun outing!

6/26/09: Scranton/WB Yankees vs Syracuse Chiefs

The last game of the small 2 game series went relatively easily. Didn't stay for the game at all the day before, leaving after pregame autographs and coming back at the end, this time I stayed a few innings and came back in the final inning. Luckily found out the one Yankee I wanted (Sergio Mitre) was in the stands, along with Bob Boone again. So I basically went for the Chiefs before and after the game. Syracuse was boarding their bus after the game to travel right away, so they were pretty easy to get afterwards. Plus Scott Olsen was still around, though he was to be called up to start soon in a series, so it was clutch to get the rest of mine done. Also got Jason Bergmann, who has been up and down so much, you never know if and when the last time will be. I was also happy to get Corey Patterson to sign both of my game used cards that I received the day he was recalled.

6/25/09: Scranton/WB Yankees vs Syracuse Chiefs

The second series for the Yankees against the Chiefs. This one was scheduled for two games, and I figure the first series was our best shot at guys. Xavier Nady rehabbed for Scranton, however, got re-injured and is out for the season. This was his only game he played. Luckily, even though he injured his signing elbow, he did sign after the game. I will assume he did this knowing that his season (and possibly next season) is over. Besides that, things weren't too bad for the first series after schools let out. I gotta figure the last series (in Sept) will be pure hell. One positive is that I only needed one person in my books and finished him quickly. Also, a huge shocker that Kevin Cash signed all 4 of my cards. Every other experience he has blown me off and all of the regulars were shocked because he will only do 1 per usually.

6/22/09: Columbus Clippers vs Syracuse Chiefs

Finale of the home series against Columbus. More of the same, although, the team was a bit nicer on the last day. I was finally able to score my Matt LaPorta, but I missed Michael Brantley actually signing a few autographs, which sucks. In the stands again was Mitch Webster scouting (I was given a few more of him), as well as Bob Boone, who has a higher position with the Washington Nationals and is a former player and manager in the majors. It's nice to be able to snag random people in the stands!

6/21/09: Columbus Clippers vs Syracuse Chiefs

After a rainout on Saturday, Syracuse and Columbus played a doubleheader today. Syracuse University basketball coach, Jim Boeheim, was signing autographs today. I was able to get him on a magazine cover and an old team photo I had (previously signed by John Wallace). The team was a bit better today, but big prospect Matt LaPorta was signing few and far between, still leaving me with none. Was successful with my books aside from LaPorta and Michael Brantley, whom would not even acknowledge people besides when his family showed up today. One positive was that early in the doubleheader we realized that there was an ex-major leaguer scouting. Everyone scattered to get their cards of him (Mitch Webster). Luckily, I was given a few extras.

6/19/09: Columbus Clippers vs Syracuse Chiefs

First game of the lone series against Columbus (Triple A affiliate for the Cleveland Indians). Pregame wasn't bad, however postgame was a joke. Columbus literally walked out 15 men strong when the hotel van showed up. It was a total joke, and most of them were rude as hell. At least I killed off some before the game, or else I would have been close to shut out.

6/16/09: Buffalo Bisons vs Syracuse Chiefs

Awful decision making on this day. Before the game I was only able to get Mike Lamb and Adam Bostick. After the game, I went to the Syracuse side in hopes of getting a few extra Scott Olsens I found. Well, I missed out on Wily Mo Pena signed down the line, doing near everything that everyone had. Instead, I got snubbed by Olsen. Bummer postgame.

6/15/09: Buffalo Bisons vs Syracuse Chiefs

Another doubleheader. As I walked in, I noticed that no one was waiting on the Buffalo side. I then looked over and noticed most of Syracuse pitchers were still on the field, so everyone was on that side. Only got 2 guys, but at least it was a good start. Buffalo now has Lance Broadway (all-prick team). He, of course, acted the same jerk way as usual. The thing that makes me happy is that the guys who are the real pieces of work have been putting up awful numbers and probably will never make it to the majors full time. Buffalo has a lot of kinda washed up vets, but at least majority at least signed one.

6/13/09: Pawtucket Red Sox vs Syracuse Chiefs

Didn't go to the game. Purchased 2 Javier Lopez cards while I was out, then went to get autographs after the game. Those were the only two cards I got signed. Period. Awful. And even better, the final game of the series is played in Cooperstown, so that was my last one.

6/12/09: Pawtucket Red Sox vs Syracuse Chiefs

With round 2 of the Smoltz obsession occurring, as well as me showing up a couple minutes later than I wanted, I decided to skip Pawtucket pregame and go to the Chiefs side. It turned out to be a great decision. We noticed a guy throwing with the manager without a uniform on. I was lucky because Foli came over to sign (something he doesn't do often pregame). I ended up asking him and he told me it was Scott Olsen and that he was going to make two rehab starts with the team. I just so happened to have his cards on me, since I had all the possible rehabbers in my box, just in case. I was disappointed as he walked by me when I yelled his name and did not stop. Well, after the game started the guy I was standing next to told me that Olsen was sitting in the stands behind the bullpen. So I went over and sat in a different section to scope it out. Olsen got up less than 5 minutes later so I asked him if he'd sign. He signed everything I had, including a double I had which I got for the girlfriend. I have to say, it was quite nice to be the only one to have anything of him and I am guessing that's why I got all 10 items signed. Didn't get too much with Pawtucket after the game, but Jonathan Van Every actually signed, so that was a shock in itself.

6/11/09: Pawtucket Red Sox vs Syracuse Chiefs

A rather interesting day occurred for this scheduled doubleheader from a previous rainout. Game time was 5pm, but a bunch of us showed up as early as 11am due to the fact that John Smoltz was making a rehab start for Pawtucket in the first game. Well needless to say, Smoltz got snuck in. I was able to get a couple guys arriving at the stadium, but definitely not worth my early arrival! Well things got even more interesting as they put the tarp on the field before Smoltz even started warming up after stretching. He starts to come on due to the tarp and the expectation of rain. I was able to yell at Smoltz as he came in, and he came over to start signing! The problem is, he walked towards me, then turned a few people to the side of me. After watching him sign about 30 balls and such, he looked ready to stop. I was able to plead and out stretch about 3 people and finally he signed for me. Overall, that was an awful experience. I doubt I could do this hobby in a major league city, that's for sure. The doubleheader was cancelled about an hour later, so Smoltz (and the lovely crowd of random people) would be around for the next day.

6/1/09: Gwinnett Braves vs Syracuse Chiefs

This was the last time we see Gwinnett for the season. Pretty good ending, with the only card left unsigned was an Alvin Colina, who signed for the first time that I saw this series, but with limited numbers. Interesting stuff happened following this but before I got to put this entry in. Jordan Schafer was sent down to Gwinnett, which sucked since I have a lot of him. However, Tommy Hanson was recalled, Charlie Morton was traded, and Chiefs coach Steve McCatty was signed as the pitching coach of the Washington Nationals. What a difference a few days make!

5/29/09: Gwinnett Braves vs Syracuse Chiefs

The Gwinnett Braves (Triple A affiliate for the Atlanta Braves) came in for their only four game series of the season. Tommy Hanson, their big prospect, was charting for the game. He was doing one per after the game, but ended up signing both of my prospect books. That was a good one to kill off, for sure. He is one of those, "Didn't I get you yesterday" type of guys. Between the first busload leaving for Gwinnett and the bus returning for the second load, I was able to kill off my Corey Patterson for the day by running to the Syracuse side.

5/28/09: Scranton-WB Yankees vs Syracuse Chiefs

After missing the 3rd day of this 4 day series, I was able to make the finale to try to kill off some remaining items. I still have all of my coach cards left as to put it frankly, Scott Aldred is a bit of a douche. Glad I don't have any Dave Miley cards..he is more stuck on himself than even Aldred. Seems like once you become a coach for the Yankees Triple A team, you become stuck on yourself (see: Espinosa, Alvaro). Even better for me, was that the Syracuse Chiefs' team set came out. This made it easier to skip my remaining Juan Miranda and coach cards after the game, to go after the Chiefs. With only one other person over there, it was relatively easy to get who I needed. I did find it funny to find my Josh Towers card in my new team set and having him sign while he was charting for the opposing team. Goes to show how many moves this team has made this year.

Game ended up raining out. A few of us went down after the game, as it was only sprinkling. We ended up inside the building, outside the locker room exit door, since there was shelter from the bit of rain. We ended up getting the majority of what we needed before being kicked out behind the barriers. Pathetic that we are pretty much the only organization to pull the barrier BS. At least the rain kept the crowds of fairweathers far away. Overall, not too bad compared to what it could have been.

5/25/09: Scranton-WB Yankees vs Syracuse Chiefs

This is always the most hectic and usually most disappointing team to come in for the year. With Scranton (AAA Affiliate of the New York Yankees) you draw the fairweather and bandwagon Yankee fans, who often take up a lot of space and aren't even wanting autographs. This is also the team that will bring in whiny mothers who assume that everyone getting an autograph above the age of 8 is going to sell it. That, along with the guarantee for fencing/barriers being up for when they exit (though the morons in Syracuse are seemingly leaving it up for nearly all teams) makes it even tougher to get autographs.

That being said, it was a surprisingly good night for autographs. The biggest issue was after the game. It seems Shelley Duncan and a few others parked on the Chiefs side. So they were exiting on that side. Luckily I got wind of it, and was able to get Duncan (suddenly a tougher autograph, having signed about 5 pregame..as he did last year also). While I was over there, I was able to get the two newest Syracuse players, too. Good stroke of fortune to go over while they were there, especially one whom I brought the cards along just in case he ever showed up.

5/15/09: Norfolk Tides vs Syracuse Chiefs

Was pretty pointless to even go to this game, as I had basically nothing to get signed. I tried to get Wieters before the game, but he stopped two people before me. Luckily my one person left in the book decided to sign right when we came in...and he was the starter. That was some good luck there. I then went to the Syracuse side and got a whole one that I needed. After the game, I was able to get the other two players I needed.

Another day, another crowd thanks to Wieters being around. Was able to pretty much grab what I needed, with a few small exceptions. This was good since I was going to miss the 3rd game of the series. The positive was killing off some Rich Hills and my Nolan Reimold books, since both were gone by the series finale. The players weren't as great as the day before, but luckily I took good advantage on that first day. I was also able to get Josh Bard for the first time from Syracuse, asked him if he could sign a specific card and yep..he signed the one next to it. Thanks Josh...

First of a four game series between Syracuse and Norfolk (Baltimore Orioles AAA affiliate). Big crowd on hand as the #2 top minor league prospect, Matt Wieters, is on Norfolk...at least for now. Also, Rich Hill is rehabbing with Norfolk, making it a good game to snatch up some autographs. It started off great pregame with both Wieters signing (not unusual) but also Rich Hill coming out and signing. Overall great first day, killing of much of what I needed easily.

5/11/09: Indianapolis Indians vs Syracuse Chiefs

Final game we will see Indianapolis and it was a morning game. A god awful day of brats running around. Luckily, I was looking through cards for Norfolk's updates..I found THREE new cards for Indianapolis that I somehow missed. I was also give a few McCutchen cards that I didn't have. Gorzelanny was in a fine mood after the game, which is interesting as I heard he was just as bad yesterday. I also took a trip to the Syracuse side but was only able to get one player.

5/9/09: Indianapolis Indians vs Syracuse Chiefs

Game two of this series, I figured I would try to finish what I could, since I would be unable to go to the game tomorrow and you never know how Syracuse weather will be. In fact, it was awful for the whole game. Wind was massive, with bits of sprinkles around. It made for an interesting attempt after the game, with players wanting to avoid signing, while we all were inside and undercover. Tom Gorzelanny was miserable compared to the first day. The positive was that I was able to finish basically everything I had, including a few Jack Wilson cards I found.

The Indianapolis Indians (AAA Affiliate for Pittsburgh Pirates) came in for the first of their four game series. This is the only time they come to Syracuse, so the hope was to kill off as much as I could on day one, since you never know how the weather will be. A huge surprise was found out, right when I walked down pregame. Jack Wilson was doing a rehab assignment for the next couple days. 4/29/09: Pawtucket Red Sox vs Syracuse Chiefs

Pawtucket (Boston's AAA affiliate) came in for a short two game series. Unfortunately, the first game rained out, so we had only today's single game. It started off ok, grabbing a few guys pregame from Pawtucket. Luckily, this game was a typical early season game, even with Boston's affiliate here. Come mid-June until the end of the season, any Scranton or Pawtucket game will be a total madhouse, with little chance to get good autographs. In a shocker, Clay Buchholz was charting and actually signing during the game. I was actually even able to get him during and right after the game, too. Then outside they had the obnoxious gates, still. They actually worked to our favor, allowing me to only miss a few less important autographs! I was thoroughly happy with today, especially getting my Team USA Daniel Bard game used signed! I was even able to get a few Syracuse players after the Pawtucket players were mostly boarded.

4/22/09: Lehigh Valley Ironpigs vs Syracuse Chiefs

Decided to go to the Syracuse side before this game, as I needed Jason Donald and Rod Nichols from Lehigh Valley and I was blown off by both before the game the night before. Of course, they both signed before the game, frustrating me. We were able to get a few before the game, though. Rehabbing Willie Harris signed, as well as Lastings Milledge who signed TWO for me (without help). That was shocking. He refused to sign after the game, however, since many of the 50 or so fans who showed up for this raining game had booed him. Ouch.

I also lucked out and since it was so dead, I got two foul balls.

Also, there was major drama, as Carlos Carrasco (very nice the night before) suddenly would not sign for anyone. It was caused by one of the autograph people, who apparently wanted to screw everyone over, while making himself look helpful. He made security bring him in from charting and then the guy wouldn't even look at anyone after the game. What a difference less than 24 hours makes.

This is the first of a short two game series between Syracuse and the Philadelphia Phillies' AAA affiliate from Lehigh Valley. My goal for this series was to make sure I got the guys who I felt would not be around in a couple months when this team returns. After the game ended up great as Kyle Kendrick signed a whole page and Carlos Carrasco signed all three books at the same time. Not bad since they were about the only ones who signed on the way to the bus.

This turned out to be the last game of the series (the next day was rained out). Decided that since I only really needed Niese and Sullivan, that I would go to the Chiefs side. Overall, it went ok. Was happy that Casey Fossum decided to sign after he charted. He was a bit attitude the day before, but fine after this game. Second game of this series, and I decided to go after Buffalo again. With it being a day game, they weren't in as big of a rush to leave, although I missed Niese who came out with his phone to his ear and a finger in the other, as well as Cory Sullivan avoiding and yelling tomorrow. Nick Evans was relatively interesting and shockingly signed for me before and after the game (before the game he asked someone, "didn't I sign for you yesterday?" Not too bad of a day, though.

4/17/09: Buffalo Bisons vs Syracuse Chiefs

First game of a four game series, welcoming the New York Mets back to the International League, after they signed with Buffalo last year. Had to work during most of the game, so only was able to get a few after the game. Stupid barricades were up..yes, for a 1-8 team.

4/11/09: Rochester Americans vs Syracuse Crunch

Used the season finale for Syracuse as a way to shore up any loose ends I had. Luckily, I was also given a bunch of Syracuse player photos, so I was able to get a bunch of things signed. The weird autograph was Kyle Wharton, whom has a broken finger on his writing hand. I didn't realize which hand was injured, but he was still very determined to sign it.

4/10/09: Rochester Red Wings vs Syracuse Chiefs

Second and final game of this early series, I decided to try the Chiefs side pregame, as well as after the game. I did go to the Rochester side in order to finish off my books for their current roster. We lucked out, as the Chiefs were travelling to Rochester for an early game the next day, so they were all getting on the bus. It also was nice that Jordan Zimmermann was signing in the gift shop before the game.

4/9/09: Rochester Red Wings vs Syracuse Chiefs

Opening day for the new affiliate of the Washington Nationals, the Syracuse Chiefs. They were facing Minnesota's AAA affiliate from Rochester. What a difference a sport makes, as I totally remembered that it was much more of a challenge in baseball, than hockey. Overall, a pretty good set of results, as I was all over the place before and after the game.

4/3/09: Rockford Icehogs vs Syracuse Crunch

Under a week and a half before the end of the season, and the Rockford Icehogs (Chicago Blackhawks AHL affiliate) make their first appearance. It was wet out and a bunch of loud and obnoxious Rockford fans were screwing up most of the autograph attempts inside, so I ended up outside. Did happen to get one of the Crunch players I missed and got most of what I needed from Rockford, although I did miss some.

3/27/09: San Antonio Rampage vs Syracuse Crunch

The only time San Antonio (Phoenix Coyote's AHL affiliate) came to town. Just as Houston did, San Antonio was apparently staying at the hotel, so they were all leaving in all sorts of directions. Did not get any cards, which was disappointing, however I did print off a nice pic of Karl Goehring for him to sign.

3/17/09: Syracuse Crunch Autograph Appearance @ Tullys

Another Tullys appearance, where the only reason we were going is because I still had Alexandre Picard cards that I have owned for over a year that were still unsigned. I figured I might as well bite the bullet and head over to get them done and over with. He was actually very friendly, a contrast from past years that we had seen him around. He seems much happier after his latest demotion from Columbus.

Cards:
Alexandre Picard - 2

3/17/09: Syracuse Crunch Bartending Appearance @ Chadwicks

Since it was a boring we, we decided to make a bunch of these appearances, after not going to basically any all year. Appearing at this were newly signed Nick St. Pierre, as well as Stefan Legein and Nikita Filatov. This appearance was actually fun, since it was a relatively down to Earth crew who at least chatted a bit.

3/16/09: Syracuse Crunch Autograph Appearance @ Tullys

While we were out, we stopped by this appearance at Tullys. We weren't sure who would be there, as there were a lot of roster changes. Turns out that the only thing I bothered getting was a pocket schedule signed by Dan Smith, since he is the cover player for it.

3/16/09: Syracuse Crunch Bartending Appearance @ Quaker Stake And Lube

We were out driving and decided to head out to Quaker Stake and Lube's bartending session for the Syracuse Crunch. Appearing were Kevin Harvey, Steve Kelly, and Michael Blunden. None of them seemed in the best of moods, to say the least..oh well.

3/14/09: Rochester Americans vs Syracuse Crunch

Even though Syracuse plays Rochester (Florida's AHL affiliate) 6 times at home, this is the first time we have seen them since October. After this night, there are 3 more games against them. Yawn. Overall, not a bad deal. Everyone was pretty good, of the players who were there. Interestingly enough, I didn't bother getting Rochester either of the first two games, so this is the start of my logo sheet for them.

3/11/09: Toronto Marlies vs Syracuse Crunch

Last game of the season against Toronto. Missed out on Jeremy Williams and Mark Bell was traded a few days before. I was deciding between continuing my Toronto Marlies logo sheet or using a new one. See, earlier this year, the photo paper I used was flimsy and easily smearing. The new brand I have been using is great with little or no smears since I've started with them. Unfortunately, I chose to continue on the old sheet. My LAST signature on it, I was about to leave when I saw Greg Gilbert. I had him sign my final card I found of him. Unfortunately, while trying to get my binder open, I pressed the logo sheet against my chest. Yep, smeared the whole signature. Bad ending to some god awful photo paper!

3/6/09: WBS Penguins vs Syracuse Crunch

Yet again, Wilkes Berre/Scranton comes to town. A couple days prior to this game, Miroslav Satan was sent down from the NHL. 2/28/09: Albany River Rats vs Syracuse Crunch

This was one of the first games played by Albany after the unfortunate bus accident. This meant a few extra PTOers and such, while a few of the guys I really wanted were injured and obviously not there. And again Bobby Hughes misses another game in Syracuse. One good thing is that Brandon Sutter (1st round pick from 2007 draft, 11th overall) was on a conditioning assignment. Not the most congenial guy though.

Grand Rapids made their final visit of the year (though it is a possibility if Syracuse makes the playoffs, that they could face them in the 1st round). Another one and done team here. My guess is, with Hershey's location (AHL affiliate of Washington Capitals) is that we will see this team probably as soon as next year. A very strong and skilled team, unfortunately a few ducked out that I wanted to get to sign, which sucked. Not too bad, though.

2/14/09: Springfield Falcons vs Syracuse Crunch

The one and only time we get to see Springfield (AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers). Knowing AHL scheduling, we probably won't even see this franchise again for a few years. Quite busy with hometown area guys Rob Schremp and Tim Sestito, as well as ex-Syracuse player Gilbert Brule, all being on the team. Add to that ex-NHL goaltender Dany Sabourin and the main areas were mobbed. Overall, great night except for Brule being his normal stuck on himself. It was nice to see a conditioning assignment, too...although J-F Jacques isn't a huge name or anything.

A bit of a bummer when a division opponent only comes to the area twice and the dates are only 2 weeks apart. Grand Rapids (Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate) was relatively alright. Tried to shore up some leftovers for this game against Wilkes/Berre-Scranton. Unfortunately, Chris Minard was once again recalled and was not around for this game. 1/24/09: Manitoba Moose vs Syracuse Crunch

Unfortunately, this is the second and last matchup between Syracuse and Manitoba (Vancouver Canuck's AHL Affiliate). The two guys I really wanted (Michel Ouellet and Curtis Sanford) were scratched and not even around for the trip. Apparently the ex-NHL goaltender, Sanford, had to go home and move his family. With this being the last game before the all star break, I figured we would get screwed over like this. Other than that, everything else went great, except missing Scott Arniel. I had to decide between more Arniel cards or Jay Wells to sign my NY Rangers Stanley Cup photo. I chose the latter.

1/20/09: Syracuse Crunch Bartending Series @ Chadwicks

After work, I figured I would go to the Crunch's bartending series, since I had time. The main reason is that I wanted to get Sebastian Dahm to sign his broken stick that he gave me a few months ago during practice. It turned out that I needed all 3 of the guys that were there to sign things for me, so it really worked out.

1/19/09: Hamilton Bulldogs vs Syracuse Crunch

With a 2pm game, I figured it was a great game for autographs. I was right. With Hamilton, I was able to get nearly everyone. The only two negatives were getting my first "I'll get you next time" from a player (you know, the most common phrase in baseball autographing but rarely used in hockey) and Marc Denis only signing my logo sheet instead of my card. As you could probably tell, Hamilton wasn't in the best of moods. Also, during the game, Crunch goaltender Ryan Munce sat with us for the 3rd period. He was being released the next day, so he was chillin in the stands. Was able to get him to sign a puck. I'm way behind on getting Crunch players to sign pucks. After Hamilton left, we were also able to go downstairs to get most of the Syracuse players that I needed, including Tyler Wright (mentioned in my last post).

1/17/09: Hamilton Bulldogs vs Syracuse Crunch

Bummer of a day. Missed out on most because Hamilton (AHL affiliate of Montreal Canadiens) took their time leaving. Since they played here again on Monday, I gave up. 1/14/09: Various Syracuse Crunch Autograph Signings

There were 3 various autograph sessions on this day. We decided to go to two of them.

The first we went to was at Papa Johns and it consisted of Mike York and Aaron Rome. The only thing I needed was my final Mike York card. I also ended up getting my official Crunch puck (received a few years ago when I got to shoot for the car on ice). It was rather uncomfortable, especially when York wouldn't even make any small talk or even eye contact. Talk about not wanting to be there...

The second we went to was at Dick's Sporting Goods. There, Craig Valette (soon to be released) and John Vigilante signed. I ended up having them both sign a puck together. I didn't intend on it, as I only wanted Vigilante on it.

Cards:
Mike York - 1

Others:

12/27/08: Hamilton Bulldogs vs Syracuse Crunch

The night started off pretty bad, as I realized I left the logo sheet for the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL affiliate for the Montreal Canadiens) at home. I had a lot of cards to get signed, so I figured maybe this would at least help me focus on them. I have to say, it actually did. I was much better organized with my many Marc Denis cards, thanks to having the free time. Overall, not a bad night. Marc Denis signed pretty much anything put in front of him, which was amazing since he had an awful game.

Cards:

Marc Denis - 11
Ryan White - 1
Ron Wilson (Asst Coach and ex-NHL player) - 3
Mike Glumac - 1
Yanick Lehoux - 1

Cards Today - 17, Overall for Season - 95

12/20/08: Lake Erie Monsters vs Syracuse Crunch

Slacking off big time on the blog here. Syracuse played the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche). Besides the coaches (both ex-NHL players), I pretty much had nothing of the team. Got a few on the Lake Erie logo sheet during a successful, yet uneventful night.

Joe Sacco (Coach) - 6
